Embracing Change - Happy New Year!
Welcoming a New Year is exciting, especially for children embarking on a new school year, in a different room, with different faces. Embracing change is an important life skill, so let’s start young!
Encouraging newness helps children to embrace change and see it as positive.
It ‘s also a wonderful opportunity to create lasting memories and introduce family traditions.
Here are some suggestions to welcome the New Year.
Family Resolution Jar
Start a tradition of writing down simple family resolutions or goals. For children, focus on fun resolutions like “read a new book each week” or “learn to bake cookies.” Revisit the jar throughout the year or glue them to a poster that you can all see.
Storytime and Reflection
Choose a book about celebrating the New Year, then talk about your favorite memories from the past year and what everyone is excited for in the new one.
Create a Time Capsule
Have children gather small items that represent their year—drawings, photos, or favorite trinkets—and seal them in a time capsule to open next New Year’s Eve.
Glow-in-the-Dark Dance Party
Turn down the lights, hand out glow sticks or necklaces, and play some fun, upbeat music for a child-friendly dance party to ring in the New Year.
“Wishing Wall” for the New Year
Set up a wall or poster board where children can write or draw their hopes and wishes for the upcoming year. Display their creations as a reminder of their dreams.
