Notice, Recognise, Respond - in action at Equippers Kids

All ECE teachers are trained to Notice, Recognise and Respond to the children they teach.

What does this mean?

NOTICE

Teachers must be observant when working with young children - that goes without saying. We are always watching! Sometimes what we notice is linked to learning - and when we observe that we look a little closer.

RECOGNISE

Once Kaiako have noticed the children developing an interest in something we make a decision (sometimes in the moment and sometimes later when reflecting on our day or when writing learning stories) whether or not this can be linked to new learning. This recognition is important because we then plan to take it further by responding.

RESPOND

Once we have noticed a growing interest and recognised that it is linked to a new learning we then respond with more opportunities to extend this learning.

Equippers kids learning in action

Our preschool children began to show a stronger than usual interest in block play which soon developed into creating specific buildings. Our kaiako noticed this and soon recognised it was a wonderful opportunity to learn more about architecture, history and iconic NZ buildings.

We responded to this interest by offering examples of historic buildings like the Coliseum. We set up space in the classroom to display photos of these buildings. The children then made a replica of the Coliseum that they can engage with during play.

This interest expanded to talking about the Sky Tower so we researched that and made paper mache versions of this wonderful building.

As the interest in Architecture grew we decided that it was time for a field trip! We took the tamariki into town and visited the Sky Tower. We also looked at other examples of old and new architecture.

This is a perfect example of notice, recognise and respond in action at Equippers Kids
